Get to Know Niagara:
As part of the watercourse of the Niagara River, the Niagara starts at Lake Erie and flows into Lake Ontario. Scientists estimate that the famous falls started to form between 10,000 and 12,500 years ago. Niagara has the world's highest flow rate with about 700,000 gallons of water per second traveling down the falls. The horseshoe falls is the tallest waterfall at about 188 feet tall and 170 feet deep.
Niagara also separates the border between the US and Canada making it easy for visitors to cross over and see the falls from both countries perspective. The most popular activities during the summer include walking down to the "cave of the winds" for a closer experience of the falls, and riding a boat tour of the Niagara River.
